Track season heats up as summer dries out

Racing season began at the Ed Rudolph Velodrome in Northbrook back on May 13th, but with several rain-outs of training clinics and Thursday/Friday night racing already, momentum has been slow to build.

Several recent days of dry weather as the season officially moved into summer has area racers focusing on results rather than the radar. The clear skies are just in time, for in addition to regular Thursday and Friday night racing, there are several events coming up and spectators at the track are more than welcome. All events are open to the public and cost $2.

o The Allvoi Cup is coming July 23 through 25th, three full days of tournament-style track racing; including qualifying, elimination, and final rounds. All disciplines are featured: pursuit, sprint, points-race, scratch-race, and kerin. Registration is now open at www.allvoicup.com.

o On August 5, the Roger DeLanghe Trophy Race is perhaps the most prestigious event held in Northbrook all year. This 50-lap scratch race offers the biggest purse of the season and will feature at least one pro track racer.

o The Illinois State Championships will be held later that month, August 21 and 22. Come watch Chicago single-speeders vie for the jerseys and a chance to compete at track nationals in Los Angeles, California later in the fall.

o Finally, the following Thursday, August 26 is the Elaine Nekritz Trophy Race, a special women-only 35 lap scratch race, along with regular Thursday-night racing.

o The Northbrook track season concludes September 9 on closing night racing.

The Ed Rudolph Velodrome is located in Northbrook’s Meadowhill Park, near Waukegan and Voltz Roads, and is safely accessible by bicycle, as well as Metra (via MDNL Northbrook Station).
