Did You Know?

Roughly every three days, one person biking or walking is killed by someone driving a car in the Chicago region.

Open Streets: Come play, volunteer

Word has been spreading fast about the big event on State Street  on Saturday, Oct. 1st!

src=http://www.activetrans.org/sites/default/files/OS_facebook_icon.jpgOn Oct. 1, instead of the five lanes of traffic on State Street, you’ll see five lanes of people walking, running, biking, skating and having a great time. And there will be activities like yoga, dance classes and games for kids.

The first-ever Open Streets on State Street will shut down this iconic setting to motorists and open it for the enjoyment of everyone—for free.

Personally, I'm looking forward to seeing people take part in the four square games, breakdancing and roller disco. And I can't wait for everyone to enjoy the mobile skate park and massive Kidz Zone. Here's the full list of activities.

If all this sounds exciting to you, and you have some time, consider joining us as a volunteer. People interested in volunteering can contact our volunteer coordinator, Cynthia Spreadbury, at OpenStreets@activetrans.org.

We're also in need of roller skate or in-line skate donations for the roller disco event.

If you have any gathering dust in the basement or garage, drop them off during business hours at Active Trans: 9 W. Hubbard Street, Suite 402, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. All skates will be donated to charity after the event. (Feel free to bring your own skates for yourself, too.)

Take in the fun on State Street between Lake Street and Van Buren Street, Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
