Chicago has celebrated three Open Streets events in 2008 and 2009. These events show us that there is a need for residents to have safe space for fun physical activity and community.
Active Trans partnered with five community based organizations and the Chicago Community Trust to open eight miles of streets on Chicago’s West Side from Logan Square to Little Village. The route passed through three of Chicago’s lush parks and truly transformed our streets into parks.
We want more! Active Trans and our community partners are still completely dedicated to promoting and expanding Open Streets. The event’s cost is standing in our way. Active Trans and our community partners worked to raise a TON of money for the three events. Other cities like New York, San Francisco and Portland have been able to commit to frequent ciclvoia events because those city departments have taken it on. In fact, Chicago is the only city where a non-profit and community-based organizations are the event producers. That model is not sustainable, so we are working to get more city support and lessen the event cost.
We’ve know the high return that events like Open Streets provides. These investments produce public health care savings, improve air quality and stimulate local economy.
We are working with individual communities who want to bring Open Streets events to their streets. Already we have worked with Oak Forest to opened Cicero Avenue before its annual Fleadh Parade, and in Homewood as part of its Fourth of July celebration. We’re ready if you are! Bring Open Streets to your community!
