Start planning your Chicagoland Car-Free Day celebrations

Active Trans is already gearing up for the second annual Chicagoland Car-Free Day on Sept. 22. We’re excited to again partner with RTA, CTA, Pace and Metra to celebrate the ease and fun of getting around without a car.

Last year, more than 1,200 people pledged to enjoy their days sans auto, and we are shooting for even more this year.

That's where you come in. We'd like to showcase car-free events, specials and celebrations you are planning.

Events can be as simple as a car-free play date for kids and parents, or it could be as elaborate as a healthy-living festival in your park. Last year we saw Car-Free Day Supporters giving out free coffee and organizing a car-free rally in Daley Plaza. Some local businesses offered discounts for those who took the Car-Free Pledge.

Once you’ve organized an activity, be sure to tell Active Trans so that we can help spread the word.

  • Here are a few ideas for events you could organize events in your community.
  • Plan a community walk or bike ride
  • Coordinate a bus or train trip with co-workers
  • Organize a Shop Local Day
  • Create YouTube video contest about transit
  • Hold a Walk to School Day
  • Throw a block party or festival
  • Offer a cycling class
  • Ask your village or town to designate Sept. 22 as Chicagoland Car-Free Day. Here is some sample language they can use.

It's never too early to take the pledge. Pledge to go car-free on Sept. 22 and then tell your friends about it!

Keep an eye on the Active Trans’ website for upcoming information about special deals and incentives that will be offered as past of Chicagoland Car-Free Day.
