Quick Releases

Moving on up in West Town
West Town Bikes is getting bigger and better. The operation has moved to 2459 W. Division St. in Chicago and has added a bike shop to its repertoire. West Town will still be your place for mechanic classes and events for adults and children. The bike shop, Ciclo Urbano, supports Humboldt Park and West Town Neighborhoods focusing on affordable and reliable transportation. All sales from the shop will support West Town Bikes’ larger mission of providing bicycle education for Chicago youth. The shop will offer service to both English and Spanish speakers and further develop the non-profit’s youth programming by offering several entry-level jobs and internships for graduates of bicycle youth programs. Find out more at www.westtownbikes.org.

Sponsorship
Give your business exposure to a whole new audience. Active Trans is looking for sponsors to support our 2009 and 2010 events and programs. From events that draw 20,000 people to bike valet at major city events and festivals, there are plenty of unique opportunities. See the many opportunities at www.activetrans.org/sponsorship or contact Rebekah Broussard at 312.427.3325 x241 or rebekah@activetrans.org.

Bike counts
Don’t be alarmed if you find yourself riding over pairs of tubes stretched across some of Chicago’s streets. The Chicago Department of Transportation’s Bicycle Program will conduct bicycle counts this summer using new automatic counters. Collecting this data will help the City justify the installation of more bike lanes and help track its progress to make the city even more bicycle-friendly.

Elgin
Watch for more bikes in Elgin! The City has hired Active Trans to develop a bicycle safety and education program. Most exciting are the crew of Elgin Bicycling Ambassadors that will be attending public events, and the Shop by Bike program that will get downtown businesses to inspire their customers to bike with discounts and other incentives.
