Name: Marcille Frederick
Location: Blue Island
Stats: Commutes by bike year-round from her home in Blue Island to her work as the Director of the Library at Trinity Christian College in Palos Heights
Please describe the route you take to work.
My route reveals residential, industrial, and suburban vistas. I cross seven sets of railroad tracks, but often see deer near the Trinity Christian College campus, and also on 131st St. My route’s a little complex because I try to avoid 127th St. as much as I can, and I also have to get around railroads, I-294, and the Cal Sag River.
Why did you start commuting by bike?
It takes less time and money than the bus, I get some exercise, it doesn’t pollute, and I get to feel morally superior and eccentric. What’s not to like?
What is your favorite part of your commute?
Oddly enough, 131st St. past the remnants of the refinery is my favorite section, even though it’s the roughest pavement. I think it’s because it’s not heavily traveled, and in the summer I can hear the frogs and birds.
What is your favorite part of biking in the winter?
Feeling that bracing cold air in my lungs, and seeing fresh snow.
What are some biking improvements you would like to see along your route/in your community?
Having the Cal Sag Trail done would take me right to work. That would be perfect.
How does the college support your bike commuting?
I was encouraged to head up the Commuter Challenge Program last summer, and I hope this year to host a workshop on biking to work. The biggest thing is that “the powers that be” don’t treat me as weird. Some folks think I’m righteous and brave, and tell me so.
