How do you incorporate biking, walking or transit into your daily routine?
I try to walk daily, just for exercise. And until recently, I didn’t really have the confidence to try to bike to work. But I hope to use my bike much more in the future for transportation – to work, to the grocery store, etc.
What got you started?
I originally thought about biking last summer when gas prices were so high. I was spending more than $60 each week on gas, and I thought I could reduce that if I could ride my bike to work one or two days a week. But I wasn’t sure about the whole idea. I drive along some busy roads, and morning and evening rush hour can be treacherous in a car, let alone a bike! But when I met (Active Trans’ Footprints program coach) Mary Lynn (Wilson), I started thinking more seriously about the idea. With her help (after today’s ride), I’m sure I can do it on my own!
What do you most like about it?
I really like the idea of getting more exercise (and having fun doing it), and reducing the environmental impact from my car. Plus I’ll be able to save some money on gas!
What do you wish was better about it?
I wish I wasn’t so dependent on good weather. I’m not sure I want to ride in the rain, or when it’s really windy. Unfortunately in the Chicago area, the weather can be great in the morning when I leave for work, but much different at 5:00 when I return home.
