Legislative Agenda 2011
The Active Transportation Alliance 2011 legislative agenda demands safer streets and more rights for pedestrians and bicyclists. Here’s a rundown of the legislative efforts we will be pursuing during the coming year.
What you can do:
Change Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT) policy on dooring
IDOT does not consider dooring incidents to be motor vehicle crashes. As a result, these crashes go unreported. Active Trans wants IDOT to report doorings as motor vehicle crashes to ensure that crash reporting data fairly represents the risks to all roadway users.
Establish equal distribution for revenue generated by the Illinois motor fuel tax
Require notification for proposed changes in school zone boundaries (HB 1138)
This bill would require entities having jurisdiction over a roadway to notify school principals and police chiefs of proposed changes in school zone boundaries. When this occurs, a public hearing would be required if requested by the school principal or police chief.

Help families erect roadside memorials
In 2010, Illinois General Assembly enacted new rules on roadside memorials for victims of certain motor vehicle crashes. This bill will charge the Victims Assistance Centers with helping families of victims get these memorials erected.
Make rumble strips bike friendly
Illinois policy currently allows for rumble strips on roads where only three feet of clear space is left available on the shoulder. This isn’t enough room for safe bicycling. Active Trans is working with the Illinois Department of Transportation to change its engineering standards to safely accommodate bicyclists on roads with rumble strips.
