Lakefront Trail Conditions March 1

Lakefront Trail Conditions March 1

The Oak Street Bend to Ohio Street section of the Lakefront Trail has seen some attention recently. A plow has been run through this section and although it has not scraped the snow and ice completely away, it won't take much warm weather to have bare pavement in this section of the Trail. I was able to ride this section of the Trail this Monday morning with a front cross tire and a rear road tire on my cross bike but I did have to ride over some snow and ice.

The section of the paved Trail just south of Fullerton has also been plowed and is now rideable. The south-bound lane has bare pavement while sections of the north-bound side still has some snow and ice.

I rode the Lakefront Trail this Monday (2/22) afternoon from Ardmore to Jackson and although there is a bit of slush here and there, it is in generally good condition and easily rideable, even with road tires. The Oak Street Bend all the way to Ohio St. was covered with snow. I did walk around the bend and then rode from the bend to Ohio St. but the banked surface was snow covered. I rode most of the way along the sidewalk next to Lake Shore Drive. The sidewalk was also covered with snow but did have pedestrian tracks and a few other tire tracks cut through the snow.

As always the recommended detour between Oak and Ohio Streets is Inner Lake Shore Drive via the Oak and Ohio Street underpasses.

I rode the Trail tonight, Wednesday, 2/10 (~9pm) from Belmont north to Ardmore and in spite of all the recent snow, the trail was in really good shape. The Trail had been plowed and heavily salted and except for just a few minor spots, was in much better shape than many of the side streets that I also rode tonight. Kudos to the Park district for their quick work on making the Trail a great option after a lot of fresh snowfall.

I just rode the Lakefront Trial from Ardmore to Grand at 8:00 p.m. this Monday (2/8) night and the Trail is in much better condition than it was on Sunday morning. The only remaining stretch of ice completely covering the Trail is next to the Revetment construction between Belmont and Diversey.

There is a stretch of dry dirt on the soft surface part of the Trail south of Fullerton.

The Oak Street Bend is too icy to ride safely but only for a short stretch. I was easily able to walk the icy section and then there is at least some dry pavement between the Bend and Ohio St.

It is, of course, supposed to snow 2-4" tonight, so conditions may change by Tuesday morning.

Lakefront Trail Conditions 2/7

I rode the Lakefront Trail this Sunday morning (2/7) from Ardmore to 51st St.

The Trail conditions range from dry pavement in many places to a sheet of ice in others. Please use caution when riding the Trail at this time. Hopefully the sun will melt some of the snow and ice that is on the Trail and the Park District will plow and salt these areas as well.

Areas of particular concern include ice completely covering the Trail north of Fullerton around the Theater on the Lake. I took a spill in this area today.

Snow and ice are also covering both the hard surface and soft surface Trail south of Fullerton.

The Oak Street Bend is actually in not too bad of shape. I walked a short bit of the Bend where the ice was at its worst but was able to ride on the walkway next to LSD from the Bend to Ohio Street. The walkway was completely free of snow and ice.

Snow and ice cover the Trail at a number of other locations as well, including a really bad spot around 33rd Street (where the trail bends to the west as you travel south) as well as:

  • around 50th Street
  • just south of McCormick Place
  • next to the Revetment construction south of Belmont
  • Near Irving Park
  • several sections between Hollywood and Ardmore

Where the Trail was completely covered with snow and/or ice, I was able to ride on the grass around these areas.

The recent warm weather was still not enough to melt all of the ice from the Trail south of Fullerton or all the way around the Oak Street Bend. From the Oak St. Bend to Ohio Street, the Trail is now clear of ice. You can easily ride this section but there is still ice around the Bend itself.

The soft-surface Trail is still the best option south of Fullerton. There was some mud and standing water in this section of the Trail this morning but most of this had turned to ice as the temperatures dropped this evening.

Ardmore south to Foster remains dotted with ice and snow. Use caution in this area as the temperatures stay below freezing for the rest of the week.

We have not had warm enough weather yet to melt the significant ice just south of Fullerton or around the Oak Street Bend. The dirt path to the west of the Trail, just south of Fullerton, is firm and in good condition for a brief detour in that area.

The Oak Street Bend to Ohio Street alternative is typically Inner Lake Shore Drive via the Oak St. and Ohio St. underpasses. Both underpasses are in good shape.

The only other ice between Ardmore and Museum Campus is north of Foster. That ice, however, is patchy and if you are careful and ride in a straight line over the brief icy sections, it is passable.

I rode the entire length of the Lakefront Trail this afternoon. The south side is generally in good shape. Around the Shedd Aquarium and next to McCormick Place, there is only a narrow section of bare pavement. Where the Tail parallels 71st Street, there is significant ice covering the width of the Trail. If you ride in this area, please do so with extreme caution.

The underpass at Ohio Street is clean. The east side of the Oak Street underpass is now clean but the west side remains snow covered. The underpass at North Ave., at least on the east side, is now clean (I didn't ride on the west side of this underpass).

The Lakefront Trail had a fresh layer of salt from Ardmore to Foster, which should help to melt some of the remaining ice on that section of the Trail. Bare pavement was present from Foster to Oak Street except for one small section between the Totem Pole and where the Trail crosses Recreation Drive. Snow covers the Trail in this area, which is on a curve, so it is potentially dangerous for that 25 or so foot section.

The Oak Street underpass is snowy and icy but I was able to ride it this Monday (1/11) morning without dismounting.

I rode the Lakefront Trail from Ardmore to North Ave. this Friday (1/8) afternoon. The Trail was plowed and salted for the duration. There is still a bit of spotty ice north of Foster but, in general, the Trail is in good shape. The North Avenue underpass has not been plowed or salted. I was able to ride through the underpass but took LaSalle Street to the Trail on my return trip.
