Elementary school students honored for poster designs

The gym erupted with excited cheers when the Chicago Blackhawks mascot, Tommy Hawk, appeared as the guest student coach for Apollo Elementary School's Student vs. Staff Spring Break Send-Off Tournament last Thursday. With Tommy's encouragement, the students were victorious over their teachers in this dodge-ball-esque match up.

Tommy's visit was the 1st place prize in Active Transportation Alliance’s poster contest that asked kids to draw how they “Get Active & Get Going.” The education team at Active Trans held this poster contest for students involved with the Afterschool Challenge and School Fitness programs, which, among other things, helped educators promote physical activity among students.

A round of applause is in order for the student winners:

• First place: Evangelin and Irene from Ms. Kosiba’s class at Apollo Elementary in Des Plaines landed their school's special visit from Tommy Hawk.
• Second place: Students Charlie and David from One Hope United in Chicago's Edgewater neighborhood won a $100 activity pack for their playground or gym.
• Third place: Elmer and Gerardo, from the Hull House Association in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood received a Sports Illustrated for Kids 2-year magazine subscription for their program.

All students in the contest received certificates praising them for their “commitment to healthful and active lifestyles” demonstrated through their creative poster designs.
