With the warmer weather, the Trail is free of ice and snow but not free of salt, run-off and winter surface damage. The Park District is in the preparation phases of their annual patch and repair program which will occur this spring. The removed pavement between North Avenue and Oak Street will be repaved as a part of this program. Many other smaller needs will also be attended to and the general Trail condition will be upgraded as a result.
As we move from winter to spring, the emphasis on clearing the Trail of ice and snow is shifted to cleaning the Trail. There is always a bit of transition time, but we will work with the Park District to minimize this as much as possible. If you see areas of particular concern, please email me here and let me know of the concern and exact location.

Redirected path – southern lakefront
Has anyone seen the lakefront’s path condition farther down south? I’m trying to get into shape now that it’s springtime and enjoyed riding down to toward Burnham Park or the Culture Center and back. I saw the city work out there last fall, yet not sure if it was finished.
Lakefront Trail 3.30.09
Monday, March 30. Lakefront trail has patches of ice at the north end, mostly sand covered between Fullerton and North, glass here and there and some chunks of loose asphalt North down to Ohio. Could use a good sweeping.
The pedestrian tunnel on the
The pedestrian tunnel on the lakefront bike path at Solidarity Drive (just south of the Shedd) should be open to the public May 1.
Broken glass, sand drifts
I commute daily on the lakefront bike path and have for many years. One thing that has always puzzled me is why the Park District doesn’t begin sweeping the path until some time in April, typically. The path is already quite busy with commuters and recreational riders, yet portions of the path are a mess, not to mention, dangerous.
1. The section from Navy Pier/Olive Park to Oak Street is, quite literally, a sea of broken glass. This morning, I saw someone repairing yet another flat. That marks six flats I’ve seen on this stretch in the last three weeks (including one of my own through a Kevlar-lined tire). I imagine there have been dozens of flats in this stretch in the last few weeks.
2. The section from North Avenue to Fullerton has a number of sand drifts that go almost completely across the path, including a large, deep drift right at the turn at the base of the North Avenue overpass. This morning, I saw the ever-civic-minded “Hi Guy” sweeping a large dune off the path in this stretch. How about we get “Hi Guy” a little help and have the Park District sweep the path?
3. Are there any plans to resurface the northern end of the path? Winter was not kind to the last two miles or so of the path and it has become roller coaster of buckled pavement (though, thankfully, not potholes).
Thanks for any help you can render on this issue. And thanks for everything you do to make Chicago so bike-friendly!
Saw another flat-changer this
Saw another flat-changer this evening at Oak Street. Would love to see that stretch swept. By the way, "Hi Guy" swept ALL the sand drifts off the stretch from North to Fullerton.
Thanks, Hi Guy!
Lots of broken glass south of Oak St
The trail was all clear except for a bit of broken glass from Oak St down to Ohio St beach.
Needed Repairs on Lakefront Bike path
There are two places on the northern part of the path that I wish the Park District would fix. The first are some ruts on the bridge going over the entrance to Montrose Harbor. These ruts have been a growing annoyance for at least the last 3 years, and I wish they could be filled in. The other is the entrance to the Marowitz Golf Course. Last year the entrance was repaved, but no safety white lines were painted over the paving. As a result, cars don't yield to cyclists, and it's becoming very dangerous.
Thanks in advance for your help. Tony Burdick
repairs on the Lakefront Trail
Thanks for the note about areas that need to be improved on the Lakefront Trail. I'll ask the Park District to paint the pavement at the entrance to the golf course. That should be included in the painting updates this spring.
I am not sure where the bridge is that you mension. Do you mean the Diversey bridge? The ruts there should be repaired this spring as I have specifically discussed this area with the Park District. If these are not the ruts you are noting, please let me know so that we can make sure that the repairs are included in the upcoming repair project.
Thanks,
Randy
North Lakefront Trail Conditions 3/30
The trail had a few icy patches along the whole stretch from Ardmore to Jackson, but I am sure these will be gone in a few hours. The lake was mean to the trail south of the Chess Pavilion with lots of chunks of concrete all over the trail. Also, south of the Oak St curve there was lots of debris all the way to Navy Pier. On the south side of the River going over the small bridge near the DuSable Harbor concession stand was sort of treacherous. Otherwise all was good and I am sure the ice and crud will be melted by mid-day!
North Lakefront Trail Conditions 4/2
At last! There was a plentitude of workers out cleaning the trail (I think they were cleaning the trail) and doing general maintenance (probably has something to do with the Olympic Committee). Overall the trail is free and clear except for the enormous craters south of the Chess Pavilion (why did they take the pavement off a month ahead of time? I personally would have rather navigated the smaller holes than had to BMX it through a few major holes). Nice to have the park people back at work and thinking of us trail users!
Like riding on the beach...
From Fullerton to the North Avenue footbridge (especially at the turn at the base of the bridge) the path is covered in deep sand in many places. Not good if you're riding your good road bike.
And that stretch from Oak Street to Ohio is once again littered with chunks of pavement and broken glass. Alas, the peril of a strong Northeaster.
Forgot about the sand!
Sorry, I was so enthralled with the chunks of concrete south of the Chess Pavilion I forgot to mention the sandbox north of Fullerton.
Off-road
I need to put on some deep knobbies for that stuff.
what about the pile of gravel
what about the pile of gravel behind the theater @ Fullerton? The pile sits right next to the path and floods the slight turn, and rocks get scattered all over. Is it possible to have that cleaned up?
Grave at Theater-on-the-Lake turn
Agreed. Especially dangerous at night or when heading southbound with oncoming traffic (that may make one move right -- into the gravel patch).
The sand was all swept from Fullerton to North. Thanks Park District!
Big waves today...
North Lakefront Trail Conditions 4/6
BIG WAVES! That was fun to see actually. There are lots of sand drifts from North to Fullerton (also the waves were crashing across the trail on the northern section of that part). As usual with big storms the lake threw up lots of debris and placed chunks of cncrete and asphalt from the Chess Pavilion all the way to Navy Pier. Not much glass but lots of rocks, etc. I can't wait for the ride home into the wind!
