I apologize for the lack of Trail reports from me this past week. I had a bad crash in a cross race on the 7th and spent a couple of days in the hospital with broken ribs and a punctured and collapsed lung.
I won't be able to ride on the Trail again until the 22nd, so I appreciate the continued Trail reports from other users, especially during this time.
With the warm weather on Sunday (12/14) most of the snow melted and the additional rain gave us a good slick covering of ice as the temperatures dropped Sunday night. The sunshine should clear things up a bit today (Monday) but until that happens, the Trail will, most likely, be very icy and slippery in many sections.
The Lakefront Trail used to never get plowed or salted. We worked hard with the Park District to establish this service. Now, many times, the Trail is plowed and salted before the parking lots in the Park. While it does usually take one full day without bad weather to get the Trail clear, the Park District is generally good about attending to the Trail. The hardest weather for the Park District to deal with is sequential storms. They can generally deal with a single bad weather event but successive ones make it hard for them to keep the Trail clear.

Trail conditions 1/5/09
The Oak Street curve is a sheet of ice. Don't try it. I walked it, and even then there were a few tense moments trying to walk up the slope. Also the ususal patch south of Fullerton is iced up again, just use the upper path to avoid it. Otherwise the path is clear.
Path conditions 12/26
from Addison to the Oak St. curve, it's pretty good. A lot of salt down, some slushy areas but manageable. However, since the park district seems to have given up on the small section along the lake at Fullerton, you must go up on the jog path which is solid ice. Had to walk through. ride safe!
LFT Thursday 12/18 8AM
The trail was in great shape between Foster and Oak (better than the streets). Plowed and salted, with only a few small patches of ice. However, south of Oak to south of the River, nothing is plowed or salted. Take streets south of Oak.
Trail Conditions
My girlfriend is going running at 8 am. I'll get an update on the path when she returns.
Path Status
My girlfriend Jen just came back from her run and confirmed that the path was clear from Irving Park--> Fullerton. Sorry I don't have more of an update. She is pretty sure it is cleared all the way down to Oak Street. And looks clear north of Irving.

The path was great today around 8 a.m., from Lawrence to Oak Street, at least. Saw two salt trucks -- one spraying and another flat bed with a couple guys with shovels. The only icy spots I saw were at Irving by the playground, and near the chess pavilion.
Gotta appreciate the effort.
And I'm sure what Ann meant is be careful, and we all wish you a speedy recovery.
