Facing massive budget deficits, Metra urges riders to speak out on proposed fare increases and service cuts. For the first time since 2008, across-the-board fare hikes are contemplated, which could be as high as 25 percent.
Possible service cuts of two to four trains on every line (except the Heritage Corridor) are in the offing.
Plummeting sales tax revenues, rising diesel costs, and loss of operating subsidies are partly to blame for the budget shortfall. Additionally, Metra can no longer afford to deplete its capital budget to fund operations. Without capital funds, repairs, upgrades and replacement of existing facilities are impossible.
To register your opinions, take Metra’s on-line survey by mid-August. Public hearings will be scheduled in the fall after a proposed budget is adopted by the board.

This has always been a debate
This has always been a debate in the elevation group. I also prefer Metra than taking the CTA. Metra is cheaper and faster. Above all, its comfortable. With the increasing prices of commodities it is so much safer to ride Metra than buy our own car.
I agree with goluckic. I'm
I agree with goluckic. I'm not going to buy a second car, deal with congestion, and pay to park downtown. Metra is so much faster, cheaper, and more comfortable than driving (and faster and more comfortable than the CTA). The demand is inelastic. Raise the fares.
Raise 'em up, I say
Sorry, but my 10 ride Metra pass means that I pay less than I would taking the CTA everyday. That's an unfair discount. (Thanks to) Metra is a far more pleasant ride than the CTA. Any which way you slice it, the Metra is a bargain, and it is time to raise fares.
