Update on Lakefront Trail repair

Here is an update from the Chicago Department of Transportation on the lakefront trail repair:

All:

As you may be aware, CDOT is performing repairs to the east sidewalk of the Lake Shore Drive bridge, which serves as the Lakefront Trail. During this repair, the sidewalk is closed.

The Trail is using the easternmost lane of northbound LSD, which has been barricaded off solely for Trail users. To better accommodate walkers, joggers, bicyclists and inline skaters, CDOT has:

--placed fiberglass panels over the open-grate bridge deck to provide a smooth, uninterrupted surface
--placed temporary asphalt ramps to ease the transition from street to sidewalk at each end
--installed a metal guardrail to separate the temporary Trail from the traffic lane (this work should be finished by day's end.)

The attached photo shows the temporary Trail section on the bridge.

The sidewalk repair was necessitated by an incident around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday. While moving the bridge to perform adjustment, a mechanical piece froze and a 10-foot section of the sidewalk broke off. We immediately began making accommodations for the Trail detour, and it reopened Tuesday afternoon.

We don't yet know how long the repair will take, but as soon as it's completed we will reopen the regular Trail.

Traffic apocalypse now!

Obviously, this isn't being done on a permanent basis because removing car lanes would instantly cause a Traffic Apocalypse.

Accident this morning

A woman had an accident there this morning. The paramedics indicated that it had something to do with her not walking her bike as the new, somewhat obscured sign indicated. She was taken away with a neck brace.

It's time for the city to provide a permanent solution to the accident factory that is this part of the path.

metal grate treatment

Open-grate bridges are responsible for countless bicycle crashes each year -- and many are located along routes designated as cycle-friendly. The type of treatment shown above (if similar to the Cortland bridge) would be a welcome addition all over the city. It's relatively cheap (especially considering the lawsuit potential of the current bridges) and incredibly important at unlocking vast swaths of the bike network.

I wonder why this change

I wonder why this change isn't just made permanent, in addition to the regular sidewalk. There really aren't that many cars on lower LSD, and there is definitely not enough space for both pedestrians and bikers on the sidewalk. I think the city should have converted one of the car lanes into two-way bike traffic long ago.

agreed.

on more pedestrian heavy days, i've been known to hop my bike into the car lane going northbound -- but southbound is always a problem. there's really nowhere to go when pedestrians are present -- which is often since this section is so close to navy pier. they should at least make a connection on the sidewalk adjacent to the southbound car lanes to alleviate some of the congestion. as of now, i don't believe the sidewalk on that side of lower lsd goes anywhere.

or else i take the streets of course, but then it's dodging angry drivers instead of pedestrians. no-win situation really.

Look at what they're doing in NY

To your point of securing a lane, take a look at what New York City is doing on an approach to a key bridge for bike traffic.

Daley supposedly has a commitment to cycling. I'd love to see the city doing something like this, especially on the lakefront bridge over the river.

Completely agree with Lee! There are already 4 lanes above. Does car traffic really need 6 to cross the river?
