In case you missed it -- more planned bikeways announced!

We recently learned about more buffered bike lanes planned for the 43rd and 44th wards. Ald. Michele Smith's newsletter shared plans for buffered lanes coming to Halsted Avenue, from Division Street to North Avenue; Clybourn Avenue, from Division Street to Belmont Avenue; and Wells Street, from Chicago Avenue to North Avenue (this would extend the recently-completed buffered lane). Thanks to Bike Walk Lincoln Park for the tip on that one!

Ald. Tom Tunney's newsletter recently shared news of a buffered bike lane coming to Clark Street, from Diversey Parkway to Addison Street.

Buffered bike lanes offer more space and visibility. They keep you further from moving traffic and the door zone, making for a safer, more comfortable ride. See photos of recently completed buffered bike lanes in Chicago below.

Check out these proposed projects on our Chicago Bikeways Tracker map to see how they'll help fill out Chicago's bikeway network!

Have you learned about any other exciting biking, walking or transit news from your alderman's newsletter lately?

Kinzie continues to wow newbies to city riding

I took several of my 11-13 year old bike club riders into the city last weekend for the Tour de Fat. We took the Metra Rock Island into the city then rode up to Logan Square. They were stressed out by riding in the downtown area, but you could feel the palpable relief when they hit the Kinzie buffered bike lane.

When planners and activists speak about the 8 to 80 rule (that whether you are 8 years old or 80 years old, you are comfortable enough to ride your bike in the street), this is what they are talking about. For transformative change that truly enables mode shift, buffered lanes might well be the answer!

Giving hope to the future...

You're giving me hope Jane! I'd be more nervous than them as the group leader. But you give me the courage to try, and belief in a formula for success! Thanks for sharing!

Buffered lanes in Humboldt Park

New buffered lanes showed up on Division in Humboldt Park, and they are awesome! A dashed line marks the area where a car door might open suddenly, and two solid lines separate bikes from moving traffic. Who do I thank for this gem?

Biked to Pilsen for the first

Biked to Pilsen for the first time and discovered the AWESOME new 18th St and Wabash protected/buffered lanes! Keep up the good work!

The buffered lane on 18th is

The buffered lane on 18th is heaven sent. Love it!

proposed lane on Broadway

Our Alderman (Cappleman- 46) has put in a menu request for a separated bike lane on Broadway from Leland-Montrose. I think CDOT is determining the viability of the proposal right now, but the Alderman is interested in a separated lane that goes in front of his office, so I think the chances are good.
