One year after launching its car-sharing service in Baltimore, ZipCar surveyed its members and discovered some interesting bits of information about the connections of car-sharing and active transportation.
When members were asked to compare their use of various transportation forms before and after being a car-sharing member, some pleasing results were found:
Additionally, the survey showed that car-sharing is a great way to take cars off the road or keep them off the road: One in five said they sold their car after joining, and nearly half said they avoided buying a car because of the service. And 72 percent said being a member reduced the likelihood they would purchase or lease a car in the future.
Active Trans sees car-sharing as a great option for saving money and reducing the number of vehicles on the roadway. Relying on walking, biking and public transportation as primary means of transportation but still having a car available when needed is a great way to help fulfill our vision of a future where half of all trips are made by walking, biking and transit.
