Photo Enforcement
As someone who commutes by bike every day, year round, I agree that red light running is a serious issue. BUT, I think a disinterested review of the literature suggests that red light cameras are not a good enforcement tool---and that enforcement may not be the answer here since timing delays on the green side have had better results.
I would like to see our legislative agenda dominated by real improvements to infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists as well as common-sense laws (such as the stop for pedestrians) which genuinely protect us. We blunt our voice when we actively support unpopular solutions which have a very mixed record when it comes to effectiveness.
determining legislative agenda
Thank you for posting your comments about our legislative agenda. Active Trans is committed to reducing all traffic crashes by 50% and increasing the share of all trips taken by active transportation to 50%. To achieve this mission we pursue a legislative agenda that protects the rights of active transportation users and improves safety for all road users.
Although our agenda is always pro-active, we must also respond to initiatives stated by others. These include the many attacks this year on red-light cameras. Year to year, we must also consider what are the best opportunities and where we have support from legislators. While we haven't publicly included reversing the Boub decision in our legislative agenda for several years, we are constantly keeping it on our radar and in discussions with legislators.
You mentioned your support of HB 43, the must stop for pedestrians bill. Thank you. We encourage you to call your State Senator and request a yes vote for HB 43. This bill will be coming up for a vote in only a few weeks. To find your State Senate, visit www.ilga.gov and click on Legislator Lookup.
