Top transit suburbs

The Chaddick Institute for Metropolitan Development at DePaul University recently issued a report ranking Northeast Illinois suburban communities for their transit service and access to transit. Click here to read the full report.

To no surprise, 11 of the "top transit suburbs" are places where Active Transportation Alliance has worked to improve transit and bike/pedestrian connections to transit services.

You might not know that Active Trans has planners on staff who help communities become more transit-friendly. We also have dedicated suburban outreach managers who educate and empower local communities to be transit-friendly.

There are so many great places to visit in the "top transit suburbs."

  • Wilmette (#2 on the list) is a gateway to the North Branch Trail and, of course, Lake Michigan.
  • Wheaton (#6 on the list) is on the Illinois Prairie Path.
  • Des Plaines (#9 on the list) has great connections to Cook County Forest Preserves and a vibrant downtown.

Wilmette has CTA service. I see little point to this study if it intentionally excludes all the inner suburbs that actually have good transit service. All the links are broken otherwise I'd read the study myself.

Go Palatine!

Top 20! Could be better, but could be lots worse. Excellent marks in some areas, and much room for improvement in others. Check out the story from the link above. Overall, it's on the list and movin on up!
