Did You Know?

Bus riders account for more than 20 percent of people using Lake Shore Drive every day while taking up a fraction of the space that cars do.

Thanks IDOT

As you know, we here at Active Trans have been busy getting new traffic safety laws passed. One of the side effects of most of our legislation is the requirement for new signage. This keeps our friends at IDOT very busy.

The Division of Highways at IDOT recently published a new supplement to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. In this supplement, IDOT gives guidance to its engineers and local agencies on which signs to use in various situations. The new supplement includes signs for:

  • Must Stop for Pedestrians law
  • New laws on red light cameras
  • Safe Park Zones
  • Pedestrian hybrid beacons
  • Distracted driving laws

Why is this important? Because this summer, Active Trans will be helping nine communities install new signage to protect bicyclists and pedestrians. We couldn't do this until these new regulations were adopted. Thanks IDOT!
