Federal Stimulus Update

The Chicago Transit Authority announced today that they are buying 58 new hybrid buses using funds from the federal economic recovery bill. The new buses are expected to be in service this fall. The CTA is also planning to use stimulus funds to eliminate more slow zone areas that currently account for around 10% of total rail track.

These two actions fulfill Active Trans' transit goals for the federal economic stimulus bill. We asked that new buses be environmentally-friendly and that the CTA work to eliminate slow zones before pursuing any new construction. Thank you CTA!

We also heard today that two communities in the Northwest Suburbs are using stimulus funds to fix bicycle and pedestrian access to local schools. This advances the Safe Routes to School movement and creates more opportunities for active transportation.
