Electric Bike Bills Advances

On Thursday, SB 236 was passed unanimously by the Illinois State Senate. This bill, sponsored by Sen. Heather Steans (D-Chicago) would clarify that low-speed electric bikes are to be treated as non-electric bikes. The bill was prompted by confusion by police on whether riders of low-speed electric bikes were subject to the same laws as drivers of motor vehicles.

The bill now advances to the Illinois House of Representatives where Rep. Greg Harris became the Chief House Sponsor.
