Crime Victims Act Advances

HB 2245, sponsored by House Majority Leader Barbara Flynn Currie, redefines crime of violence to include leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash that resulted in the death or personal injury of a pedestrian or bicyclist. This makes the victims of such crimes eligible for compensation under the Crime Victims Compensation Act. More than 6,000 crashes occur each year in Illinois involving pedestrians and bicyclists. More than 1,000 serious injuries and 170 fatalities result from these crashes each year.

Today, the House Judiciary-Criminal Law Committe recommended approval of the bill on a unanimous vote. Please call Majority Leader Currie at 217-782-8121 and thank her for sponsoring this bill.
