Nominate your favorite crossing guard

They keep children and adults safe in some of the most dangerous streets and intersections, and now there’s a chance to thank your favorite crossing guard – by nominating her or him in the comment section below.

The nominations honor Crossing Guard Appreciation Day, May 5, 2009, which celebrates and thanks the important work of crossing guards in helping make bicycling and walking easy and safe in our communities.

Here are five more ways you can appreciate your crossing guards every day:

1) Say thank you! Crossing guards put their lives on the line daily to protect us, our children, older adults and people with disabilities. A simple 'thanks' can go a long way toward acknowledging their dedication and making them feel appreciated.

2) Respect their authority. Crossing guards work hard to create the needed gaps in traffic to provide safe opportunities for people to cross the street. Make their jobs easier by following their lead - wait when asked to wait, and don't dally when directed to cross.

3) Stop for pedestrians. When we obey speed limits, stop signs and traffic signals, we protect the lives of our crossing guards and those they assist. When driving or biking, stop completely for crossing guards and pedestrians in crosswalks. Stop with plenty of room – at least one car-length away. Don't breeze by (in your car or on your bike) when a crossing guard is stepping into traffic. Trying to hurry past will only put people crossing at risk.

4) Hang up the phone. Crossing a busy street can be a complex situation, requiring all of our attention. If you need to talk or text, don't do it while crossing a street on foot, and NEVER use a phone while driving or biking.

5) Advocate for their work. Depending upon your community, crossing guard programs may be supported through a police department, a school district or general municipal funds. Let your local officials know how important crossing guards are in your community by speaking up at public meetings or writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.

Crossing Guard Team

There are a lot of very friendly, polite, reliable, and experienced crossing guards in Evergreen Park. One guard at the corner of California and 89th Street stops traffic for me almost everyday, and I'm just biking to my substitute teaching job. Its almost embarrasing.
But I have to reserve my nomination to the best team of crossing guards ever...John and Lynn. They are not married to each other, but it is obvious they are great pals. They are often seen sitting, talking, and waving their arms to make a point...after hours. However, they are very serious on duty. Each has a job to do getting kids safely to and from Central Junior High, EP Community High, and Mother McAuley High. Lynn takes the kids across the southbound lanes, and John lets turning traffic pass northbound until he is ready to stand in harms way and block all turning movements across the busy intersection. It gets complicated. Not only is Kedzie and 94th very busy, but it also has a busy freight train line that cuts across diagonally through the intersection.
John and Lynn keep up a friendly banter with the kids, reproach car drivers for stopping in the crosswalk, and shoo waiting kids off of the tracks all while performing their assigned tasks. I can even rely on these two star crossing guards to tell me if either of my daughters has been by yet or not. Thanks for the opportunity to nominate these great public servents.

Robyn, the crossing guard at Addison and Keeler, is always happy and cheerful, even when the weather is nasty. It's a busy intersection -- cars run the red light every day -- and she works to keep people safe when they cross. She helps school children, elderly ladies headed to church, people on their way to work and dog walkers, and she always has a friendly word for all. Another bonus: she is a dog lover, and she bakes dog cookies and hands them out to her regulars!

Crossing guard

I too would like to nominate Fred at the corner of Jackson and East Ave in Oak Park.
This guy is the sweetest frendliest guard I ever seen. He is ALWAYS up and bubbly remember the kids either by name or by sight. Not only that, but he also remembers the car and their drivers and pets also.
No matter what foulness the weather is dumping on us Fred is always cheerful and has only positive things to say. He sets a fine example to all the kids who pass him by. There have been several times where I have been snapped out of stinking early morning bad mood by his cheerful greeting.
Give this man a medal!

best crossing guard

Deborah is a crossing guard for Washington School, and she works at the corner of Florence and Lee. Her positive energy is contagious, and she considers all of the Washington School kids to be her most precious charges. She could not be more friendly, even during downpours and blizzards. She sends the kids off to school with a smile and friendly greeting. Parents feel the warmth, too, and also the security in knowing that there is another adult present who is deeply committed to the safety of all children.

He best crossing guard ever

Fred Nelson of Evanston Illinois and crossing guard at Lake and Wesley for Dewey school is the best crossing guard ever. He is a wonderful and caring professional who keeps our children safe every day of the school year. He is family to us. We appreciate the job he does and how he watches after all of us. Having Fred to say good morning to is a great start to our day!

Henry... the best!

Henry is our crossing guard at Lincoln and Prairie in Evanston. He has been at that intersection for the 14 years that our children have been going to the neighborhood schools... and he's just amazing. He knows everyone, how they are connected, how old they are, and who they walk with. He welcomes the little ones in strollers and celebrates the day they finally walk to kindergarten. He connects with the parents and sitters as we are all amazed when our little ones stop crossing at his station and move onto high school and beyond. He always wants to know who is doing what and still remembers every name and face. He makes this feel like a small town. And, this contributes in a huge way to a feeling of safety! When I see him, he can tell me if my children have already crossed to go home and who they were with. I feel incredibly fortunate to live near Henry's intersection!

Crossing guard nomination

I nominate Sarah, a crossing guard for Dawes School in Evanston's District 65. Sarah is the most pleasant, responsible, and cheerful grossing guard imaginable. My wife and I feel quite comfortable trusting her with our children's safety.

A GREAT START TO THE DAY!

Deborah, the Washington Elementary School crossing guard at the corner of Lee and Florence in Evanston, IL, is AWESOME! She not only takes great pride and care in her duties, she also sends all the kids (and their parents!) off to school with a hearty cry of "HAVE A GOOD DAY!" This enthusiastic message sets a terrific tone for the rest of the day. We love her!

*THE BEST* crossing guard...

The absolute best crossing guard has to be Bryce, who works at the corner of Lincoln, Webster and Geneva, right by the tin man at Oz Park. He is the friendliest guy--always has a warm smile and kind greeting for everyon: the kids, the parents, the local merchants, the streets and san guys and the homeless. Bryce keeps the high schoolers in line, and lets motorist know, in a gentle but firm way, when they are not respecting the crosswalks and pedestrians. Bryce has had a few health scares over the years, and everyone at the bus stop and walking by fills each other in when they know how he is. His not-so-secret vice is that he loves to visit the riverboats to "try his luck" on the weekends. He is a dear person who brightens the day for so many of us!

Exemplary Crossing Guard

Henry R., at the corner of Lincoln and Prairie in Evanston, protects hundreds of students walking and biking to and from two schools and commuters using the Central Street Metra station. Henry arrives early and stays late, builds good will in the neighborhood, knows the students' names, is a fierce enforcer of pedestrian rights, and has contributed significantly to the building of a pedestrian culture in Evanston.

Crossing guard

I'd like to recognize the friendly crossing guard at 34th and Oak Park in Berwyn. She always has a smile on her face, regardless if it's sunny, snowy or raining. She's always looking out for everyone.
