Slowing down car traffic in Humboldt Park, Wepa!

Last night, 26th Ward Alderman Roberto Maldonado welcomed a group of concerned residents and advocates to the Humboldt Park Boat House to present ideas for making the park friendlier for bicyclists and pedestrians. The meeting was hosted by the alderman, the Humboldt Park Advisory Council and the Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities partnership, which includes Active Trans.

Ald. Maldonado brought along his 10 year old son and talked about his own family’s traffic safety concerns when they travel to and from the park. He stressed the importance of making the park safe and accessible for everyone—whether traveling by bike, on foot or by automobile.

After the alderman’s opening remarks, the crowd of more than 30 people heard some ideas about how to make the streets in and around the park—Kedzie, California, Division and North—safer for cyclists and pedestrians. They got to see renderings of proposed projects and explanations of how they would work. Participants expressed support for slowing cars down through and around the park; after the presentation, participants helped designate which intersections and projects were most important.

The engineering firm hired to do the plan will use the community’s input to finalize recommendations and present them to the alderman. In a show of his leadership with pedestrian and bicycle issues, Ald. Maldonado announced that he will convene a 26th Ward Transportation Committee to advise him on transportation and safety issues within his ward.

right of way?

maybe somone can assist?
this past sat. i was crossing a four-lane at the designated bike crosswalk. traffic light was red, but by the time i was coming to the cars on the inside lane it changed to green. i took the brunt of a lexus suv. two hours later i had emergency surgery to put pins in my wrist. ortho doc said the worst he's run across. he's an avid rider as well. tomorrow i'll have my second surgery to put a plate in my wrist....i do know the passenger saw me crossing, but the driver had his mind on his destination. his 80 year-old mom was just brought to the er where i soon would be! to "cya", the driver filed a police report stating that i was crossing on a green........suicidal in my way of thinking! so....i've been ticketed!
any advice? sorry, i'm pecking with one finger here!!

thank you

Patrick,
Thanks for answering and I will make the contacts you suggested. Here's more I've discovered...after doing a white page search on the driver I've found out that he is between 65-68, and.......a doctor. My ortho-doc and his nurse are both ouyrages by this finding.
Also, this smells really bad in the fact that although the local police were on the scene, the ticket was written by a Cook County Officer who appeared at mt room in the ER. A poor soul who was ready to break down, apologizing to me for having to even write ths ticket. so, there was a good 45 minutes from the time of the accident until this officer appeared in the ER. I'm still piecing this together, but I'm not liking where this is going.
My brother is a retired Orland Park Officer who is also outraged. This is a person now given just weeks to live, planning his funeral. and he still feels so strongly about this. Mike has also told me to get a good lawyer and sue this a**hole! So, without funds, I'll see what advocate/lawyer can represent me pro bona. This is just so wrong!

It is great to have a talk to

It is great to have a talk to make the pedestrian walk on street fearless and even bicycle riders can enjoy and benefit from morning riding. Every state should take some steps to encourage the citizens to become more health conscious.
