Legislative Agenda 2010

Our 2010 legislative agenda demands safer streets and pedestrian protection. Tell your elected officials that you demand safe transportation in Illinois!

What you can do:

Stop for pedestrians (HB 43) (SB 30)

HB 43 would clarify current law by requiring drivers to stop for pedestrians in all crosswalks – even those that don’t have a stop sign or traffic signal. Current law is vague and nearly impossible difficult to enforce. Active Trans is working with Sen. Heather Steans (Chicago) and Rep. Luis Arroyo (Chicago) to make Illinois a state that prioritizes and protects people, not cars.

Funding for Safe Routes to School HB 4948

This bill, introduced by Rep. Robert Pritchard (Sycamore) would give Illinois residents an opportunity to support Safe Routes to School funding by making donations through their state tax return forms.

Lowering Speed Limits SB 2804

This bill would give municipalities more control over the speed limits they set in their communities. It would allow municipalities to reduce a speed limit of 35 mph to 25 mph in low-density residential districts. Lowering speeds on roads is one way we can make them safer for drivers, pedestrians and drivers.

Red Lights Cameras No bill number at this time

Active Trans is concerned about this bill that would ban red light cameras because it would remove a very effective tool that reduces speeding and red light-running. Pedestrians and bicyclists are disproportionately impacted by those dangerous driving behaviors. Red light cameras punish drivers breaking the law and deter that behavior in the future. Read about studies that show red light cameras’ effectiveness here.

Surface Transportation Authorization

Active Trans and its national partners will advocate for bicyclists, pedestrians and transit riders in the new multi-year surface transportation bill.
